Three furniture shipping cost scenarios

The ranges below are planning figures, not fixed quotations. They assume ordinary furniture, standard access, no customs inspection, and properly prepared export packaging.

Market context: in September 2026, published Asia-US benchmarks were around $7,600 per 40ft container to the West Coast and $9,500 to the East Coast. Rates can change quickly, so every estimate should be rechecked against the shipping week.

Scenario 01 · Small LCL shipment

Sofa, dining set and TV cabinet to Los Angeles

  • Foshan pickup
  • About 4 CBM packed
  • Residential delivery near Los Angeles
  • 25-40 days

For roughly 4 CBM, LCL usually makes more sense than paying for an entire container. The main surprise is often the destination charge: it can be nearly as important as the ocean freight itself.

$2,500-$4,000

Estimated logistics cost, excluding import duties and unusual access charges

Pickup and consolidation in China
$300-$600
Export handling and documents
$200-$400
LCL ocean freight
$800-$1,300
US destination and clearance fees
$700-$1,000
Local delivery near Los Angeles
$500-$700

Scenario 02 · Two-bedroom home

Beds, wardrobes, sofa and dining furniture to Dallas

  • Foshan pickup
  • About 12-15 CBM packed
  • Inland residential delivery
  • 35-50 days
A coordinated living and dining furniture package for a two-bedroom home

This is the decision zone. LCL can still work, but once destination handling is added, a 20ft container may cost only slightly more while reducing cargo handling. Both options should be quoted on the same door-to-door basis.

$6,000-$9,500

Estimated logistics cost by LCL or a competitively priced 20ft container

Supplier pickup and consolidation
$500-$900
Packing and export handling
$400-$700
International freight
$2,500-$4,000
US port and customs handling
$900-$1,500
Inland delivery to Dallas
$1,700-$2,400

Scenario 03 · Whole-home FCL

A three- or four-bedroom home in one 40HQ container

  • Foshan pickup
  • About 50-65 CBM packed
  • Warehouse or accessible address near Los Angeles
  • 25-40 days
Wrapped whole-home furniture being loaded into a shipping container

At this volume, FCL normally gives the lowest freight cost per CBM. It also keeps the furniture inside one container from loading in China to unloading in the USA, which reduces handling and damage exposure.

$10,000-$14,000

Estimated logistics cost to the Los Angeles area; East Coast delivery may reach $13,000-$18,000

Pickup, loading and China export handling
$800-$1,500
40HQ ocean freight to Los Angeles
$7,000-$8,500
US clearance and port handling
$800-$1,500
Local container delivery
$700-$1,500

Read the scope before the price

What is included in these estimates?

A number is only useful when the route and scope are clear. The examples above represent a practical logistics budget from supplier pickup in China to standard delivery in the United States.

Included in the examples

  • Collection from suppliers around Foshan
  • Warehouse consolidation or container loading
  • Export documentation and China customs clearance
  • Ocean freight and standard destination handling
  • Customs clearance service and basic final delivery

Quoted separately

  • US import duties, tariffs and sales tax
  • Customs inspection, storage or demurrage
  • Liftgate, stair carry or restricted-access delivery
  • Unpacking, assembly and packaging disposal
  • Insurance above the stated carrier liability
Important: furniture duties depend on the product, material, construction and HTS classification. China-origin goods may also attract additional tariffs. Keep duties outside the logistics estimate until a customs broker confirms the classifications.

The volume decision

When does a full container cost less than LCL?

LCL is not automatically cheaper because you pay only for part of a container. Destination handling is charged by shipment and volume, so the advantage narrows as the order grows.

Packed volume Usually worth pricing Practical expectation
Under 8 CBM LCL Usually the lowest total cost for a small number of furniture pieces.
8-15 CBM LCL and 20ft FCL Compare complete door-to-door totals; destination fees can erase the LCL saving.
15-28 CBM 20ft FCL Often better value per CBM with less handling, if loading access is suitable.
28-65 CBM 40ft or 40HQ FCL Normally the practical choice for a whole-home or multi-room furniture package.

The useful comparison: ask for LCL and FCL prices that cover the same pickup address, US destination ZIP code, customs scope and delivery conditions. Comparing one port-to-port quote with one door-to-door quote tells you very little.

Why two similar orders price differently

What can move the final quote?

The packed volume and final ZIP code usually create the biggest changes. A quote based only on showroom dimensions or “one house of furniture” is not reliable enough for budgeting.

  • Packed CBMCartons, crates and protective foam increase the space beyond the furniture dimensions.
  • US destinationLos Angeles-area delivery is different from Dallas, Chicago or a remote residential address.
  • Delivery accessA loading dock costs less to serve than a home requiring an appointment, liftgate or small truck.
  • Shipping weekPeak season, capacity changes, fuel surcharges and port congestion can move rates quickly.
  • PackagingStone, glass, upholstery and high-gloss finishes need different export protection.
  • Customs eventsInspection, missing documents or incorrect classification can add time and unplanned charges.

Request the right number

How to get a furniture shipping quote you can actually use

Send enough information for the forwarder to price the full route. If the packing list is not final, ask the supplier for estimated packed dimensions rather than product dimensions.

A useful quote starts with a room-by-room product list and final packed measurements.
  1. Supplier pickup city and number of suppliers
  2. Carton count, packed dimensions and gross weight
  3. Furniture descriptions, materials and commercial value
  4. Final US ZIP code and residential or commercial access
  5. Required shipping date and requested insurance
  6. A written list of included and excluded charges
